What a question! Processed or homemade? Refined or whole foods? Dairy or no dairy? Meat of no meat? Soy or no soy? And if dairy, meat or soy then organic or conventional? Grass-fed/pastured or grain-fed? GMO or nonGMO? Need I say more? Eating has become so stressful and hazardous to our health that many of us are lost in the sea of health claims from the media, contradictory "science" articles and advice from family and friends (however well-intentioned it all may be).
What I'll do here is share with you the wisdom I have gleaned from various sources and what I've found to be true in practice with us. It's taken me years to learn some of this and instead of having you hunt for all of the same information yourself I'd like to let you stand on my shoulders and get a better view with less work. While my family has seen some wonderful changes in our health due to this information, none of you should consider this to be professional medical advice. Everyone's needs are different and for those with serious medical conditions, I wouldn't want you to disregard what your doctor tells you just because you like what I have to say.
Before we begin, a basic rundown of how we eat at our house. We avoid processed foods as much as possible. If my recipe calls for a can of beans it's because most people don't make them from scratch. However, I probably made my own for the recipe (dried beans are much less expensive than canned) and they'll probably be organic. I only buy conventional when I have to, and sometimes I'll skip the ingredient altogether if organic isn't available. We eat meat, but it's not the focal point of our plates and it isn't present at every meal. When meat is present, it's organic and pastured. We eat very little processed oils and fats but we eat a ton of nuts and avocados. Fresh vegetables and fruits are a staple in our house.
While my way is not the only way to prepare and eat healthy food, I hope you enjoy what I have to share. I don't claim to know everything and I am not a nutritionist nor am I a doctor. I'm simply trying to feed my family the best way I know how. I also hope what I've learned can help you live a longer, healthier and less pain-filled life than you have so far.
